The Great 78s – Pop Music of the 50s
This fascinating book was first published in 1980 when it took a look back on the music and recording stars of the 1950’s, listing over 40 UK and USA multi million selling recording artists.
The 78’s in the title refers to the big 78 rpm records of that time. Sadly the musical era the book covers is constantly ignored by radio stations, creating a black hole in our history of pop music. After the “Big Swing Bands” of the 30’s and 40’s began to fade out there was a span of approximately 12 years before the big rock groups took over, when some of the greatest recording stars of all time made the 50’s a classic time for talent.
A top DJ’s said recently “There was no pop music before the Beatles”, well if you believe that you’ll believe anything. Read this trip back into our music past and be amazed at just how massive their record sales and sell out tours were. The following are just some of the artists listed, most with their photos: Frankie Laine. Johnnie Ray. Kay Starr. Mario Lanza. Nat King Cole. Doris Day. Jo Stafford. Steve Conway. Al Jolson. Bing Crosby. Teresa Brewer. Liberace. Teddy Johnson. Rosemary Clooney. Guy Mitchell. Ann Shelton. Al Martino. Les Paul. Frank Sinatra. Vera Lynn. Jimmy Young. Perry Como. Billy Daniels. Tennessee Ernie. Eve Boswell. Billy Eckstine. Eddie Fisher. Dickie Valentine. Lita Rosa.Yma Sumac. Alma Cogan. Michael Holiday. Frankie Vaughan. Joan Regan. Tony Brent. Ruby Murray. And many more.
